Russian New Year

January 1 - New Year's Day

The New Year holiday is very popular, especially with children. Almost in every house there is a New Year tree. The presents are supposed to be brought by Father Frost (Santa Claus) and the Snow Maiden at night.

It comes at 12 o'clock on the 31st of December. People prepare  holiday supper beforehand. Most favourite dishes are salad "Olivie", a cake and champagne. People usually  see the New Year in at home with their relatives, but some people like to go to their friends.

Russian people gather round a festive table. They are addressing New Year's greetings and good wishes to one another. They are raising their wineglasses filled with sparkling champagne.  At 12 o'clock people are sitting at the table and say "Best wishes for the New Year". The New Year is always connected with new plans and dreams. They give each other  presents. At night after meeting the New Year they watch TV, dance, make jokes and go for a walk, make fireworks.
